Every year, many people are affected by floods. They lose their homes and infrastructure is destroyed and in a large flood many people can die. Victims of flood are increasing with about 50 million people affected each year. More than 25,000 of these people die, and millions more are affected by injury and disease. Flood also kill domestic animals and farmland. The human and economic cost is huge.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans, U.S.A. 80% of the city was submerged.
The causes of flood are varied. First, major floods are caused by tropical storms. In New Orleans in USA, big floods happened in 1974 and 2005. Second, rising sea levels cause floods. Scientists believe that ice in the Antarctic is increasingly melting every year. For this reason, the flooding problem will get worse especially in some low-lying areas such as Bangladesh. Finally, deforestation in mountains and coasts contribute to flooding. Trees protect from landslides, and protect the coast from the storm, so the cutting down of trees exacerbates the problem.
In Bangladesh, people lost 6 million houses by flood in 2004. 3 billion people were affected, and many people died from bites from snakes, which had lost territory.
Floods affect people all over the world. Asia is particularly badly affected, and Bangladesh is the most affected country. In 2004, a big flood affected Bangladesh. 6 million people lost their homes, and 2 million people had to move to a safe place, but some people had to leave behind their houses, which were submerged in the water. Bangladesh depends on rice, but they lost 1 million sacks. Wealthy countries are also affected. In America, Hurricane Katrina destroyed in New Orleans in 2005.
If you live in flood area, you can protect yourself from flood. First, we have to know weather information. Radio is easy to carry, and we can know information wherever we are. Second, check the nearest safe shelter. Third, prepare emergency food. When flood happened, we can’t obtain food and water. Finally, check your house for structural weaknesses.
Effect of flood will be a bigger problem in future. How to solve these problems will be a major challenge. Holland is one country finding a good solution. Much of Holland is under sea level, but people of Holland are protected by a dyke system. However, it’s not possible to carry out such measure everywhere. In fact, floods are getting worse and to solve the problem, our consumer society will need economic and political changes.
The 1755 Lisbon…Historically, earthquakes have caused huge amounts of devastation. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake happened in Portugal. The scale was magnitude 8.5 About 60.000 people were killed by the tsunami. In 2004 a huge earthquake happened in the west coast of Sumatra Indonesia. The scale was Magnitude 9.3 and 226,566 people die. Many people are still missing. Even today, the desire modern technology is the major problem in many part of the world.
What is the cause of an earthquake? The earth is covered in plates. When one moves, it makes the earth shake. The scale of the earthquake depends on how much it moves. It is not fully understood but researchers say there are main four types. First, one plate sinks under another plate such as the Tokai Earthquake. A future earthquake, which may soon hit the Pacific Ocean side of Japan. The scale can be about Magnitude 8. Second, one plate pushes another plate, so a gap is formed between them such as the Kobe Earthquake in 1995. Third, when the maritime plate goes under the continental plate, it breaks up and it makes earth shake such as The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Fourth, when one plate has a weak area, earthquakes can happen such as the Fukui Earthquake in 1948.
Earthquakes can cause huge devastation. For example, in the magnitude 7.3 Kobe Earthquake in 1995 in Japan, 6434 people died, 43,792 were injured and 64,000 houses were destroyed. The cost of the damage was about 10 billion dollars. Secondary effects such as fire can cause even more casualties. The scale of damage depends on time. For example, the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake happened at 11:58am, which meant many people were cooking for lunch. Therefore they were using fire stoves, which they did not have the chance to turn off. This made a firestorm and killed 15,000 people, and destroyed over 31,000 houses. Another secondary effect such as in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was the very big tsunami. Waves, which were an average of 10m heights, hit the coast, killing 226,566 people with many unaccounted for.
On the left, it…If you prepare for earthquake, you increase your chance to survive. First, you should check refuge areas. This is place to meet and be safe. There should be one near your house in an area like a school or a park. If you make an emergency bag, it can help you survive. People who have experience of a big earthquake say the most important thing is water. Until rescue comes to help, there is no clean water. And also you should put a radio into the bag. Correct information is vital after an earthquake, because there are other rumors and unmissed information.
Earthquake is a power of nature. People cannot prevent all damage so you should prepare for it as much as we can. As mention before, citizen we have to make refuge bag and check where is a closest refuge place. Government needs to educate us about earthquake. With knowledge, we can substantially reduce the number of victims. Internationally, we should share the information and through co-operation, we can perhaps predict when an earthquake will happen.
NY City. It’s the urban environment that is not quiet everyday, but it is strongly connected with nature.
When I went through a park, which is located in the town, I found a squirrel inside of the park. He wasn’t afraid of people, and he was watching us. This park isn’t located in nature, but the squirrel was enjoying himself in the park. Also dogs, which are kept by owners, were enjoying playing with other dogs in the park. Then I realized that people who live in NY are enjoying with beautiful green to refresh their mind.
They have also different kinds of places to make them free, which are called Community Gardens. 10years ago, the city of NY gave people empty lots in the middle of the city. They worked intently to make a garden for a long time. Now they have beautiful gardens in the city. They make vegetables by themselves, and they sell them.
The green is also used for skyscrapers. It’s called Roof Gardens. Usually, the top of the roof uses black tar, which traps sunlight and heat. This material makes rises the temperature of the surrounding area. For this problem, they made the roof gardens. They changed roof to cool roof that is white, which reflect sunlight and heat. And it increases roof life span. They are considering reducing the urban heat island effect. In the roof gardens, people make vegetable, and they provide it.

Today, there are done many greening in NY, but also it’s possible to do such projects in any countries. It’s not easy to change a current environment, but if each and every person focuses on making better, the city definitely will be clean.
It is said the weather affects people’s physical condition, although it has not been proved scientifically. It is said it might be connected with changing of the air pressure, temperature, humidity, and so on. For example, when it’s raining out the human body tends to become tired, or eager to be irritated. But, when it is sunny the human body is either happy or bored. Some say thunderstorms sometime make human blood pressure higher.
In Finland the weather is really hard especially in the winter season, there’s a lot of snow and you can see the sun only for few hours in a day. Finnish people have the highest sucide rate in the world, and this could be connected to the weather. Research shows the bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, but meaning of that is not proved yet. More recently, good evidence has been found to link exposure to bright light with the increased production of a substance called serotonin, or 5HT. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, i.e. it carries signals from the output of one nerve to the input of the next inside the brain. Lack of serotonin is known to be a cause of depression, and indeed this maps well onto what people say: tasks which are easy when you are well become frustratingly difficult when you are depressed. Serotonin is the substance made more plentiful by the now well known drug Prozac, and the similar “SSRI” drugs. It is tempting to note that melatonin is made from serotonin within the brain, but there is no evidence to say that this link plays a part in what happens.(this is not my own writing.)
How people feel good or bad according to the weather is also according to the region. Since ancient times, people have made a connection between weather and health. Hippocrates first wrote about the affect of hot and cold winds on people and the possible connection between epidemic disease and weather conditions in 400 BC. Centuries later, medical science began a series of experiments that led to a revived interest in the connection between weather and health.(this is also not.)
2005 was the warmest year of the last 1200 years, and it is expected to increase by 1.4 to 5.8C. Climate change is not only an environmental issue but will also effect human lifestyles. For example, rising temperature causes water shortage, which leads to starvation. The cutting down of CO2 helps rising of temperature. Humans are already aware of changes, Global Cool was established to wake people act on these changes. Vast majority of scientists are warning about global warming.
Global Cool is a new UK based international environmental foundation established by Dan Morrell. It was established in 2005 with the aim of stopping the global warming. Their aim is to reduce Co2 ten billion tons within the next decade. They were only formed in last year, but are already exciting organization. It contains a lot of well-known celebrities, musicians, and scientists in the member. The celebrities and musicians help to promote Global Cool to more people by having some shows. They appeal in fun ways, such as make a presentation through concerts.Their primary aim is to help the planet by cutting global CO2 emissions. It is 10 years plan and the goal is to reduce 10 billion tons. Global Cool is trying to let people and also the government consider about the dangerousness of global warming. They named the activity they are claiming people to do in daily life “Be Cool”, which can tell that it is designed for the target of young audiences. The contents are such as turning off the lights when you are not using, or turning the heating just one degree down, etc. They adopted a slogan says “One by one, ton by ton”.
They use a sophisticated marketing strategy to promote its message. Many celebrities are in Global Cool as a member, including Orlando Bloom, Sienna Miller, Scissor Sisters, Flea from RHCP, The Killers, etc. Since they are well – known, it is much easier to get people’s attention, especially young people. The foundation uses educational and entertaining events to promote themselves. On July 2005 they talked in front of millions of people in Japan, on the stage of Fuji Rock Festival. The audience’s main purpose was not to hear Global Cool’s speech of course, but the audience’s could have some interests in their aims. Having celebrities and using concerts is the way they’re marketing but it is successful in terms of getting young people’s hearts. Small recognition can make a big difference.Global Cool was created around a scientifically basis. To have more credibility, the celebrities are not suitable members, but scientists are. Global Cool by having professional scientists as core members seeks to publicize the further and exact information about global warming. Forest. What is the general forest which is called from us? It might be different from our vision what we image and see in usual. But it has two kind of forest in this world, one is called artificial forest, and another is natural forest. Generally, artificial forests are planted by human and grow up to like a forest, but almost goals are making wood for building materials. Other goals are protection from wind and sandstorm. But if human bore to attention, a lot of problem would be appeared, for example, other plants are overpowered with the artificial forest, under plants couldn’t grow up and make landslide, make a pollen allergy and so on. Recently, some artificial forest manager’s administrative responsibility are felled off because register research doesn’t work and this make obscure boundary, especially today, woods supply is from Chinese rather than Japan, according to these causes, it would be accelerating desolation.
Then, why it will be lost natural forests? Because, human makes artificial forests for human’s profit. Today, coniferous forest accounts for almost artificial forests, these coniferous seeds are brought to natural forests and disturb primary ecology. Create something having goal is great but this is the only good for human, not for the nature.
